The Harmel FamilyMy great-great-great-grandfather Philip Harmel lived in the town of Pikeliai in Lithuania. His sons Michael Harmel and Peisa Harmel (and possibly Joseph Harmel and Simon Harmel too), born in the mid-19th century, emigrated to Dublin in the 1870s.
In Dublin, Michael Harmel, my great-great-grandfather, married Hannah Rubinstein (known as Dora). Hannah was the daughter of Moses Rubinstein (see the Rubinstein family page for further details.) They had 9 children - Arthur, Helen, Ted, Ethel, Rose (my great-grandmother), Abraham, Simon, Molly and Cissie. My great-grandmother Rose Harmel married Lewis Cohen in Cork. (See the Cohen family page for further details.) Arthur Harmel and Helen Harmel (Lewis) emigrated - along with many other Irish Jews - to South Africa at the turn of the century, whilst Ted Harmel emigrated to the USA. In South Africa, Arthur's son Michael Harmel (named after his grandfather) was a leader in the fight against apartheid and a close friend of Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and so on. His family was exiled in the 1970s because of their anti-apartheid activity. Members of both Arthur Harmel's and Helen Harmel (Lewis)'s families remained in and/or returned to South Africa and are still living there. The families of Simon Harmel, Ethel Harmel (Littman) and Molly Harmel (Sayers) eventually settled mainly in England, and include the actor Gordon Littman (one of the cast of Powell and Pressburger's film The Red Shoes) and the playwright Michael Sayers (who, amongst many other things, wrote the screenplay for the James Bond film Casino Royale.) My great-great-grandfather Michael Harmel's brother, Peisa Harmel, married to Freda Zlotover, also emigrated to South Africa in 1890. He had two children, Simon Harmel (born 1861) who married Rebecca Smollan, and Dora Harmel (born 1866), who married Wolf Goldwater. Much of the family is still in South Africa; some emigrated to the USA.
